Learn how you can build an affordable website with a great design!

Having an online presence is key in today’s world. It’s been estimated that around 5.8 searches occur on Google every day! If you don’t have a presence online, now is the time to get one.

But building a website can be a bit scary, and whether you do it yourself or have a website design company do it for you there are a few things to keep in mind.

Below are a few tips on what to keep in mind when building your new website.

(keep in mind that these tips can be used for any type of website, whether it be a personal, small business, ecommerce, etc.)

Less is more

I think we’ve all been in that one garage, or the hoarders house down the street. You walk in and it’s nearly impossible to find anything because there is so much clutter.

When it comes to websites, be sure your site isn’t that one garage or the hoarders house.

Being extravagant can be a good thing in some industries, but with websites, the simpler the design, the more beautiful they become.

Get to the point

It’s important for a simple, beautiful website, to let the user know what to do as soon as they visit the website. They will most likely want to navigate around the home page and look at your services.

But eventually, they want to know what action they should take to access your product or service.

Their time is valuable so help them get to the point, this leads to my next point :)

Focus on your value proposition and call to action

Make sure you make it very clear what your consumer audience should be doing. Whether it’s giving you a phone call or filling out a form. There are many types of call to action, but as is stated, it’s a call to action.

You want them to take action. In the previous point I talked about helping them get to the point of your website (lots of points...). This is where the call to action comes into play.

Having an “above the fold” call to action is vital to your website’s success.

Value propositions go really well with call to actions. They are statements that help set you apart from the competition and show what value your product or service can offer.

So make sure to have both a value proposition and a call to action.

You can see how we use the value proposition and call to action on our home page:

Use effective and relevant images

This last spring/late winter I went to Arches National Park in Utah. This National Park is full of majesty and wonder. As you drive through the park you go past towering walls of red stone.

The pinnacle of the park experience is to hike up and view the Delicate Arch (shown in the picture above). This arch is tremendous to behold, yet I would have a near impossible time describing it to someone else without a picture of it.

I could tell them how tall it was or describe the color and the way it’s shadow fell across the rock, but without a picture it’s really hard for someone to picture it.

All that being said, try using relevant images on your site.

Let icons and images help tell your story, effective images can help show your website visitors what you are about and can help show your brand and culture.

In closing

Try to keep these things in mind when building your website:

  1. Less is more
  2. Get to the point
  3. Focus on your value proposition and call to action
  4. Use effective and relevant image
